Kirk was giving a presentation when shots were fired, reportedly hitting on his neck. According to his spokesperson, “to the best of our knowledge, he was hit and taken with his security team away from the premises”. He was on his American Comeback Tour, holding a Q&A session from a pop-up tent when the attack occurred. The attack on Kirk marks the latest act of political violence across the United States. The university announced that its campus would remain closed through Sunday and that it was suspending all classes, campus events and adminrative operations.
Suspect released: FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that Charlie Kirk’s shooting suspect was initially in custody, but was later released following questioning. “The subject in custody has been released after an interrogation law enforcement. Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency,” Patel said in a statement on X. US leaders condemn attack: US President Donald Trump in a video message expressed “grief and anger” over the killing of his key aide Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University and vowed that his adminration would “find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity and to other political violence”. US Vice President JD Vance asked people to “say a prayer for Charlie Kirk”. House Speaker Mike Johnson called him a “close friend and confidant”. Ben Shapiro wrote he was “utterly stunned and heartbroken.”
