Chess legend Susan Polgar reveals cancer diagnosis, says ‘surgery was successful’
On World Cancer Day (February 4), chess legend Susan Polgar revealed her recent cancer diagnosis, but also said that her surgery had been successful.
The Hungarian maestro credited early detection and excellent team of doctors for the surgery being successful.
“I recently was diagnosed with cancer,” Polgar revealed on X. “Luckily, due to early detection and being blessed with an excellent team of doctors, the surgery was successful. I will continue to have regular checkups. This is very important. Early cancer detection is essential for successful treatment and improving cancer outcomes.”

Having overcome the health scare, Polgar also had some advice for people.
“I urge you to get regular screenings and make healthy lifestyle choices to reduce risks. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating well, and exercising regularly are also very important.
“Life is short! It can come and go like a feather in the wind. There is no room for regrets as tomorrow is not promised. Every moment is precious so enjoy it to the fullest. Love your family and be kind!” Polgar added.
The eldest of the three Polgar sers (the others being Sofia and Judith), Susan, became the top ranked woman in the world in 1984.Story continues below this ad
She is also remembered as the third-ever female grandmaster, getting the top title in chess in 1991. In 1996, she became the women’s world champion.
The Polgar sers were famously homeschooled their father, who wanted to condition his three daughters to be successful chess players.
