Chinese toddler urinates in restaurant glass, mother defends act, sparks outrage | World News

A bizarre incident at a restaurant in Hangzhou, China, has left diners disgusted and social media buzzing—after a two-year-old boy urinated into a glass meant for customers, with his mother casually defending the act, the South China Morning Post reported.
The incident took place on March 13 at Fuyuanju Restaurant and was witnessed a diner identified as Tang, who later reported it to the news outlet The Cover. According to Tang, the young boy was dining with his mother and two elderly relatives when he suddenly stood up, pulled down his trousers, and urinated into a glass—right at the table.
“When the boy said he needed to pee, one of the elderly family members fetched a bin, suggesting he use it. But the boy’s mother dismissed the idea and said, ‘Just let him pee directly into the glass,’” Tang recalled.

What frustrated Tang and other diners even more was the lack of intervention from the restaurant staff. The urine-filled glass remained on the table, creating an unbearable odour for near customers. Eventually, Tang and her friends had to ask a staff member to remove it.
While the boy’s mother later apologised, she also justified her actions. “We’re sorry, but he really couldn’t hold it anymore. So he peed in the cup,” she told the staff.
The incident has sparked heated debate on Chinese social media, with many users calling it “Haidilao Urinating Gate 2.0.” This is a reference to a recent scandal involving the popular hotpot chain Haidilao, where two teenagers recorded themselves urinating into a hotpot soup, triggering widespread backlash and forcing the company to pay substantial compensation to affected customers.
Many users criticised the boy’s mother for her apparent lack of concern for public hygiene, while others called for stricter restaurant policies to prevent such incidents. The restaurant, however, has not yet released an official statement addressing the controversy.
