Singapore Prime Miner Lawrence Wong led the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) to a resounding victory in the general elections on Saturday, winning 87 out of 97 seats and securing 65.6% of the vote in his first national test as head of government. Prime Miner Narendra Modi was among the first world leaders to congratulate Wong on the sweeping win.
“Heartiest congratulations @LawrenceWongST on your resounding victory in the general elections,” Modi posted on X. “India and Singapore share a strong and multifaceted partnership…I look forward to working closely with you.”
Wong, who took over as Prime Miner in May 2024, said the results were a “clear sign of trust stability and confidence.” He added, “To all Singaporeans, I say the results will motivate us to work even harder for you. We will do our best to serve you and improve your lives,” according to PTI.

The PAP also increased its vote share from 61.2% in the 2020 elections to 65.6%.

Opposition holds ground; turnout tops 2.4 million
The Workers’ Party, Singapore’s leading opposition, retained its 10 seats, maintaining its foothold in parliament. In total, over 2.4 million voters cast their ballots across 1,240 polling stations in what was the country’s 14th general election since independence.
The PAP contested all 92 constituencies, while the Workers’ Party ran in eight and other parties like the PSP and SDP filled out the race. One five-member constituency was won uncontested the PAP.
Economic challenges ahead
The vote came as Singapore faces economic headwinds, including the impact of US tariffs and a global slowdown.
Wong said the results gave his government a strong mandate to push forward with economic reforms and social support. “It is a changed world – not just an economic slowdown, but fundamental shifts in the international order,” he saidStory continues below this ad
“The results will put Singapore in a better position to face this turbulent world.”
This was the first general election under Lawrence Wong’s leadership since he took office in May 2024, succeeding Lee Hsien Loong. He noted that the next step would be to form his Cabinet.
