Comedian whose mimicry offended Karan Johar revisits controversy: ‘My father worked at Dharma, held Karan as a ba’ | Bollywood News

Kettan Singh, who found himself at the centre of a controversy after he mimicked Karan Johar on a television show, reflected on the incident and said that he had no idea why Karan was upset. Although Kettan issued an immediate apology and reiterated what a big fan of Karan’s he was, he said that at the time, he didn’t know if Karan had taken offence to his words, his mannerisms, or the content of his comedy. Kettan had mimicked Karan on the show Madness Machayenge – India Ko Hasayenge; the filmmaker had seen a promo for the show, and had written an angry note on social media.
In an interview with The Lallantop, Kettan was asked about the controversy that erupted after Karan took offence to his mimicry. Kettan said that he was approached a colleague, who suggested that they resurrect an idea that they had while working on Kapil Sharma’s show. “It was called Coffee with Chooran. I’d done six or seven episodes as that character, and it was very well received,” he said. Asked if it’s possible that Karan hadn’t seen the mimicry on Kapil’s show, Kettan said, “It’s Kapil Sharma’s show, everybody watches it.”
Asked how he became aware that Karan was angry, he said, “Not every other person was mimicking KJo. And I only mimic those people whom I’ve observed closely. I don’t think anybody has done KJo better than me. Not a single line in that script was offensive. I never overdid anything. Yes, I retained Karan’s tendency to use double entendre. I was sitting at home on my laptop, and somebody sent me a post on Instagram. It was Karan’s note. He hadn’t mentioned who he was angry at, or even what channel he’d seen it on. But I knew he was talking about me. I checked the promo, but I couldn’t understand why he was upset.”

Kettan said that Karan is a hugely respectable personality, and that his instinct was to issue an unconditional apology. He said that he didn’t have any wrong intentions, and revealed that his father worked in the Dharma Productions accounts department when he first moved to Mumbai. “My father even held Karan in his arms as a ba. When K3G was released, it was the first time he bought us tickets for a film,” he said.
In his note on Instagram, Karan wrote, “I was sitting and watching television with my mom… and saw a promo of a reality comedy show on a supposedly respectable channel… a comic was mimicking me in exceptionally poor taste… I expect this from trolls and faceless and nameless people but when your own industry can disrespect someone who has been in the business for over 25 years it speaks volumes about the times we live in… this doesn’t even anger me it just makes me sad!”
In his original apology, Kettan said that he was a huge fan of Karan’s, and that his mimicry was based on having closely observed Karan on his chat show, Koffee with Karan. He told Times Now, ““I would like to apologise to Karan (Johar) sir. First of all, whatever impersonation I do because I watch a lot of Karan Johar on the show, I am a fan of his work. I have seen his latest film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani 5 to 6 times. I am a huge fan of his work and his show. If my actions hurt him, I would like to apologise to him. My intention was not to hurt him. I just wanted to entertain audience but if I did something extra, I would like to say sorry to him.”
