Deadly attack highlights rare mass shootings in Australia

A mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach during a public Hanukkah celebration on Sunday left at least 12 people dead and several others injured. Police said two gunmen opened fire on crowds gathered for the Hanukkah event; one was shot dead at the scene while the other remains in custody.
Mass shooting deaths in Australia are extremely rare, largely due to strict gun laws introduced after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania, where a lone gunman killed 35 people. But there have been such incidents nonetheless, no matter how infrequent.
Croydon Park, Sydney (2025) 
A gunman fired dozens of shots from an apartment balcony, injuring at least one person. No deaths were reported.
Wieambilla, Queensland (2022) 
Six people died, including two police officers, after officers were ambushed at a rural property. The three shooters, described as Chrian extrems and conspiracy theors hostile to police, were later shot dead following a six-hour siege. A neighbour was also killed.
Darwin, Northern Territory (2019) 
A lone gunman killed four people and injured another in a shooting spree across multiple locations. The attacker was arrested and later convicted.
Significant mass shootings this century included two murder-suicides with death tolls of five people in 2014, and seven in 2018, in which gunmen killed their own families and themselves.
