Director-screenwriter Suparn S Varma, whose latest film Haq hit the theatres recently, has lent his support to Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar as the film faces flak for its violence. The trailer of Dhurandhar released earlier this week and the graphic visuals here have been criticised on social media. Suparn took to X and said that if these visuals were a part of a Korean or Japanese film, then the viewers would have welcomed it.
Taking to his X handle, Varma wrote in a post, “I’m just amazed some of the chatter about the violence in #Dhurandhar the same viewers would have called it cinematic brilliance if this was in any other language or a Korean or Japanese film. It’s high time we started to celebrate Hindi cinema and its filmmakers with the same passion we celebrate all makers and films.”

The director also extended support for Aditya Dhar and said, “Each filmmaker comes with his/her unique voice and identity and background & I have been left spellbound the world and characters created @adityadharfilms and his amazing team (sic)!”

The four-minute trailer of Ranveer Singh starrer Dhurandhar has many violent shots, including a person being tortured with many fishhooks on his body, and another in which Akshaye Khanna’s character kills someone crushing their head using a stone. The movie stars Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan, and Sanjay Dutt in pivotal roles. Produced Jio Studios and directed Aditya Dhar, it is set to hit the theatres on December 5.
This is not the first time that the depiction of intense and graphic violence has raised questions on filmmakers. Earlier, Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Nikhil Nagesh Bhat also got flak for the bloody, gorry content in their films Animal and Kill, respectively. The Malayalam film Marco was also criticised for showcasing violence in a glorified fashion.
