Diabetics with comorbidities will be at higher risk in Covid third wave
BHOPAL: Diabetics with comorbidities will be at higher risk than children in the third wave of coronavirus. It has been predicted that children will be infected in the third wave of coronavirus. But some health care professionals believe that high blood sugar causes malfunction in the immune system. Glucose is the main source of various other infections like bacteria and fungus. So it shows that persons in such category are at high risk.
Dr Subroto Mandal, cardiologist, said ìBlood sugar has an adverse impact on the immune system of the body. So such persons remain always at high risk as far as Covid infection is concerned. Even on comorbidities like heart attack, hypertension and other cases, diabetics are at risk than the children. Diabetic persons should be very much cautious and take precautions for protection from coronavirus.
Dr ID Chaurasia, neurologist, Hamidia Hospital, said, ìPersons with comorbidities are always at risk from a Covid infection point of view. Small kids, who have weak immunity, will be affected with a corona in the third wave. Such groups are vulnerable in the third wave of coronavirus. In the case of diabetics, sugar level plays a crucial role as hyperglycemia suppresses the immunity of the body and makes it vulnerable to any diseases. Such persons are at risk not only for Covid infection but for many diseases as sugar provides a favorable condition for many bacterial and fungal infections.
High blood glucose can damage tiny and large blood vessels, causing an increased risk for microvascular and macrovascular complications. The most common conditions in patients with diabetes included hypertension, overweight/obesity, hyperlipidemia, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease. Poorly controlled diabetes increases the risk for skin, bone, eye, ear, gastrointestinal, urinary tract, and respiratory infections, among others, with significantly increased hospitalization and mortality rates.
