Dismayed with our wrestlers being manhandled: Anil Kumble
Former India captain and coach Anil Kumble has raised his voice against the scenes that transpired in the national capital on Sunday, May 28 with the country’s top wrestlers being detained Delhi Police.
“Dismayed to hear about what transpired on the 28th of May with our wrestlers being manhandled. Anything can be resolved through proper dialogue. Hoping for a resolution at the earliest,” Kumble tweeted on Tuesday. The 52-year-old was part of the JioCinema broadcast team for the recently concluded 2023 Indian Premier League season.
The wrestlers had tried to march to the new Parliament building on, the day it was inaugurated, but were stopped the Delhi Police, which tried to detain them. The wrestlers had resed. There were ugly scenes where India’s top wrestlers were dragged and lifted police forces and taken into detention.

Later that day, the wrestlers and other protesters were booked for rioting and obstructing a public servant in discharge of duty. The Delhi Police also cleared off tents, mattresses and every other item from the protest site at the protest site in Jantar Mantar.
On Tuesday, Rio 2016 bronze medall Sakshi Malik, Tokyo 2020 medall Bajrang Punia and world championship medall Vinesh Phogat stated that they will they will ‘immerse’ their Olympic and world medals in the Ganga at Haridwar.
“These medals are our life and soul. After we ‘immerse’ them in River Ganga, there would be no meaning for us to live. So we will got to India Gate and sit on a fast unto death,” the wrestlers said in their statement.
“All of you saw whatever happened on May 28. The way we were treated and detained the police. The police not only cleared out our protest area at Jantar Mantar, but also regered FIRs against us, despite the fact that we were protesting peacefully. Have female athletes committed some crime asking for justice for the sexual harassment committed against them? We have been treated like criminals,” the statement further read.
The country’s top wrestlers have been staging a protest at the Jantar Mantar in the national capital for over a month, demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, alleging him with multiple incidents of sexual harassment and misconduct.
