The festival’s origin and significance can be traced back to mythological legend with the word ‘Hartalika’ — ‘Harat’ and ‘Aalika’, translating into ‘kidnapping’ and ‘female friend (friend)’, respectively.
According to the story of Hartalika Teej, Parvati’s friends kidnapped her and took her to a deep forest so that her father would not marry her to Lord Vishnu against her will.
On the day of Haritalika Teej, Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva, leading to his promise of marriage and permission from Parvati’s father, Himalaya.
Hartalika Teej is a festival celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, corresponding to August-September of the Gregorian calendar. There is a one-month gap between Hariyali Teej and Hartalika Teej.Story continues below this ad
