Don’t judge Gautam Gambhir’s performance as India coach yet: Ajay Jadeja | Cricket News
Former India batsman Ajay Jadeja feels that it is too early to judge Gautam Gambhir’s performance as India coach since it has been only six months into his tenure.
Gambhir, who has no previous experience coaching teams in the longer format and came into the job after his impressive performance work with franchise T20 teams, came under considerable scrutiny after India’s 0-3 series whitewash at home against New Zealand earlier this month.
A massive 295-run win over Australia in the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy has turned that momentum around, but scrutiny remains high of the former India opener’s ability to lead India across formats. Jadeja feels the high pressure, this early into the job, has been unfair.
“I think you are being unfair to him (Gautam Gambhir)… If you will start judging people on the basis of their coaching role or whatever way it is being looked at, it is too short a time to for people to be judged,” Jadeja told PTI. “If you are not convinced that he is good, then one performance here or there will be able to convince anyone. I don’t think it is the time to judge him, it is the time we should enjoy him.”
Gautam Gambhir has not merely raised eyebrows due to India’s performances, but with his brash, at times abrasive, comments regarding players and pundits too. Jadeja believes those judgements are harsh as well.
“So, there are phases and it will come, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. So, I won’t go into that direction and start judging him in six months,” he said. “You knew what you were asking for and what you were getting. He is a very clear-cut person and he has made it clear throughout his life. So, what you are seeing now is what everyone expected him to do.”
