‘Don’t let your kids use it if…’: Roblox CEO’s remark sparks online safety debate among parents | Technology News

Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki has stirred a fierce debate among parents with his remarks concerning online safety on the widely popular gaming-cum-social networking platform.
“If you’re not comfortable, don’t let your kids be on Roblox,” Baszucki said in a recent interview with the BBC. He also said that the company took the online safety of its users extremely seriously and pointed out that millions of users have “amazing experiences” on Roblox.
“We do, in the company, take the attitude that any bad – even one bad incident – is one too many. We watch for bullying, we watch for harassment, we filter all of those kinds of things, and I would say behind the scenes, the analysis goes on all the way to, if necessary, reaching out to law enforcement,” Baszucki was quoted as saying.

Baszucki further said that building a trust and safety system was a top priority since Roblox was launched in 2006, adding that he was confident of Roblox’s safety tools protecting users online.

While some parents agreed with Baszucki’s comment on taking greater parental responsibility, others reportedly expressed concerns about exing risks such as grooming and addiction among minors using the platform.
“Roblox is ruining my son. He is a single child and both parents are so busy working. I feel guilty we haven’t been able to give him quality time. That’s been robbed Roblox,” the anonymous parent of a user was quoted as saying the BBC.
They also highlighted that their child finds a way to continue playing on Roblox creating multiple accounts despite temporary bans. Another parent alleged that Roblox’s filters do not appear to be working as a user had attempted to groom their nine-year-old daughter.Story continues below this ad
“When she approached me, it was with a lot of tears, and feeling very, very shameful with what had happened. I assured my child that it’s not their fault that they have done everything correct – to tell me. This is unacceptable for a platform that’s advertised towards young children. It seems like the company isn’t taking any responsibility and clearly their filters are not working,” the unidentified parent said.
In response, Roblox said that it had rolled out online child safety measures such as screen time limits. It also stressed that the company analyses all communications that pass between members on the platform using advanced AI systems.
