England playing XI announced for 1st ODI vs India: Joe Root makes 50-overs return after 13 months in Nagpur | Cricket News
England have announced their playing XI on the eve of the first ODI against India in Nagpur on Thursday. Former England captain Joe Root has been named to make a return to the ODI XI for the first time since November 2023 during the ODI World Cup held in India.
Root, who was not named in the T20I side, is coming off representing Paarl Royals in the SA20 league in South Africa. Jos Buttler’s men, meanwhile, were drubbed India 4-1 in the T20I leg of the series.
Despite the defeat in head coach Brendon McCullum’s first white-ball assignment with the side, captain Jos Buttler has insed that England will continue to play an aggressive brand of cricket in the 50-overs format too, taking a cue from India captain Rohit Sharma who lit up the last World Cup with his opening blitzkriegs.

“We want to play in exactly the same way. We want to find ways to put pressure on the opposition with the back. You’ve got to take wickets, I think it’s crucial you see how if you let guys bat for a period of time, they can go on to that. We’ll be desperate to try and find ways of taking wickets. It’s always about execution, really,” Buttler told reporters on Wednesday.
While Ben Duckett and Phil Salt will open the batting, Root is slated to be back at his usual No. 3 spot with captain Buttler slotted behind Harry Brook at 5. Liam Livingstone and Jacob Bethell fill in the all-rounders’ spots while England have named three seamers in Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse and Saqib Mahmood besides veteran spinner Adil Rashid.
