Europe’s 1st private rocket test flight ends in the ocean 30 seconds after liftoff | Technology News

On Sunday, Germany-based aerospace startup Isar Aerospace conducted its first test flight of the Spectrum rocket from the Andøya Spaceport in Norway. The uncrewed 28-meter, two-stage rocket, designed to deploy small and medium-sized satellites into orbit, lifted off successfully at 12:30 PM CEST (4:00 PM ). Approximately 30 seconds into the flight, the mission was intentionally terminated, and the rocket crashed into the sea in a controlled manner.
“A test flight is exactly that: a test to gather data, learn, and improve. Everything Isar Aerospace achieved today is remarkable, and they will have lots of data to analyze,” wrote Isar Aerospace in a blog post.

Despite the brief duration, Isar Aerospace considers the test flight a success. The mission provided valuable data, validated critical systems such as the Flight Termination System, and offered insights into the rocket’s performance under real-world conditions. This information is crucial for refining the Spectrum rocket’s design and enhancing the reliability of future launches.
The launch represents a significant milestone in Europe’s pursuit of independent space launch capabilities, reducing reliance on external providers. Isar Aerospace, supported the European Space Agency (ESA), is among several private firms aiming to revolutionize space access in Europe. The Spectrum rocket is specifically tailored to meet the growing demand for launching small to medium satellites, a rapidly expanding segment within the commercial satellite market.
As the company continues analysing data from this test flight, it is also preparing for subsequent missions. The production of Spectrum launch vehicles #2 and #3 is already underway, demonstrating Isar Aerospace’s dedication to advancing its launch capabilities.
