Even Sharmila Tagore can’t defend Nadaaniyan, but says grandson Ibrahim Ali Khan ‘looked great’ in it: ‘Not up to the mark’ | Bollywood News
The veteran actor Sharmila Tagore has shared her two cents on her grandson Ibrahim Ali Khan’s much-talked-about debut film, Nadaaniyan, which was released on Netflix on March 7. The legendary actor acknowledged the efforts of both her grandchildren, Ibrahim and Sara Ali Khan, but agreed with many in the industry (and the audience) that Nadaaniyan could have been much better.
In an interview with Anand Bazaar Patrika, the veteran actor admitted that while Ibrahim looked good on the screen, the film didn’t work for her. “The film was not good, even though Ibrahim looked great. These things shouldn’t be discussed out in the open, but at the end of the day, the film has to be up to the mark, and it wasn’t,” she said.
Since Nadaaniyan dropped on Netflix, the film has faced a lot of criticism, and most of it has been directed towards Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor’s performances. While a barrage of bad reviews followed, many defended the newcomers and the film. Sara came out in support of her brother on Instagram, and shared screenshots of the film trending in various countries, while Ibrahim’s aunt, Soha Ali Khan, had advice for the young actor and told him that “one has to be receptive to certain criticism and have to work on their craft and go forward.”

Actors Dia Mirza and Juggal Hansraj, who played Ibrahim’s character’s parents in the film, blamed the backlash on the ‘eat the privilege’ culture. Many others from the industry, such as Sonu Sood, Hansal Mehta and Karan Johar, have expressed their sorrow regarding the kind of comments that were made about Ibrahim and Khushi’s performance.
Only time will tell whether Ibrahim will be able to take the rich legacy of his family forward. Sharmila Tagore made her debut with Satyajit Ray’s critically acclaimed Apur Sansar (1959) and quickly made people stop and take notice of her skill as an actor. Her most recent appearance was in the Bengali film Puratawn, directed Suman Ghosh.
