‘Extremely sorry’: Rajat Patidar refuses to leave ground, makes TV umpire retract wrong decision and smashes six in SMAT final | Cricket News

Madhya Pradesh captain Rajat Patidar raised a few eyebrows when he refused to leave the field after his team’s batting innings in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final against Mumbai in Bengaluru on Sunday.
Patidar was displeased when TV umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan overturned the on-field umpire’s call for a wide off the last ball after being referred upstairs Mumbai with the DRS. Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur rolled a slower-ball outside the popping crease on the off-side, which was missed Patidar even as he shuffled across to nudge the ball.

While the ball had pitched outside the popping crease, the TV umpire overlooked it to revoke the on-field umpire’s call, stating that the batter had moved across the line. With the match hanging in the balance, Patidar refused to leave the ground, urging the on-field umpires to have another look at the decision. The TV umpire soon had another replay of his call and overturned his own decision. “Extremely sorry, the ball had pitched outside the popping crease. I did not see that,” Ananthapadmanabhan was heard saying on the official broadcast, handing Madhya Pradesh another ball with Mumbai losing their review.

The extra delivery proved costly for Mumbai as Patidar deposited Thakur’s full-toss for six down the ground, helping MP make a strong recovery to finish on 174 for eight in after being sent in to bat.
Mumbai had triggered a batting collapse, leaving MP 63 for four after 10 overs. Walking in at No. 5, Patidar was boosted a packed Bengaluru crowd, who reminded of his Royal Challengers Bengaluru allegiance. Patidar whipped up a 40-ball 81 with his-last ball six being his sixth maximum of the night.
Patidar is the leading run-scorer for MP this season, smashing 428 runs in nine innings. He smacked 27 sixes in the tournament, only behind Urvil Patel’s 29.
