US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that the United States would retaliate against Islamic State if US forces were attacked again, following the killing of three US military personnel in Syria, Reuters reported.

Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said the US service members were ambushed during the attack.

“This was an ISIS attack against the United States and Syria,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “There will be very serious retaliation.”

Trump said the United States was mourning the deaths of the three Americans killed in the incident.

“We mourn the loss of three great patriots in Syria,” he said, according to Reuters.Story continues below this ad

The Pentagon has said two US soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed in the attack near Palmyra in central Syria. Three other US service members were wounded.

US officials said the attack was carried out a lone Islamic State gunman, who was later killed partner forces.
