Before France’s imperious win, the Round of 32 had not been a happy hunting ground for teams classified as favourites: Germany and the Netherlands both crashed out in penalty shootout at the hands of Paraguay and Morocco respectively while Brazil only survived being dragged into extra time Japan thanks to a last-gasp goal.
