Gemini gets ‘Personal Intelligence’, a feature that lets AI pull information from Gmail, Drive and Photos | Technology News

AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity are great, but one of the biggest problems with these AI-powered assants is that they often forget personal details. While some assants, including ChatGPT and Gemini, can remember information shared users, this often requires users to manually tell them what to save. To address this very issue, Google Gemini is getting a new feature called “Personal Intelligence” to offer more personalised responses without relying heavily on manual input.
Google says the new memory upgrade to Gemini lets the AI chatbot securely connect “information from apps like Gmail and Google Photos to make Gemini uniquely helpful.” While it can connect to Gmail, Photos, YouTube and Search in a single tap, the tech giant says users will also have the option to “control exactly which apps to link.”
For example, users will be able to ask Gemini the license plate of the car they recently travelled in, search for a hotel they stayed in years ago, and even go through their Gmail hory to ask queries.

While Personal Intelligence is turned off default, once enabled, Google says Gemini will be able to access user data to answer specific requests and do things on your behalf. Since Google already has your sensitive data, the company says one of the key differentiators is that your data won’t be sent elsewhere, a.k.a third-party services. Gemini will also try to show references or explain where it got the information from, and if it doesn’t, Google says you can ask it.
“Personal Intelligence has two core strengths: reasoning across complex sources and retrieving specific details from, say, an email or photo to answer your question. It often combines these, working across text, photos and video to provide uniquely tailored answers,” says Josh Woodward, VP, Google Labs, Gemini & AI Studio.
The company goes on to say that it has tested the beta version of Personal Intelligence to minimise makes, but it is still prone to errors. To turn it on, open Gemini, tap on Settings, click on Personal Intelligence and select Connected Apps. Gemini’s new “Personal Intelligence” is currently rolling out to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US to a limited number of users. The company says it will expand the functionality to more countries and free tier in the future, as well as to AI Mode in Search.
