‘Ghar, ghar jaisa dikhna chahiye; store nahi’: Inside Neena Gupta’s Mumbai home | Lifestyle News

Veteran actor Neena Gupta recently invited viewers into her Mumbai home, giving an intimate tour showcasing her living space and the personal memories woven into every corner. From childhood nostalgia to cherished artifacts, her house reflects her personality—warm, welcoming, and filled with stories. At the beginning of the video, Neena reminisces about how she frequently changed houses when she earned more money, always moving into a slightly bigger space. However, the house she currently resides in has been her home for 24 years—one she holds close to her heart.
Her father played a significant role in making this house a home. “When I moved in, my father lived with me. He was my man, actually—because I didn’t have a husband at that time. He was the one who made this house work. You can have a house, but how do you run it? He took care of everything while I was busy working.”

Her father’s presence and the bond he shared with her daughter, Masaba, are among the most treasured memories of this house. “This house holds a lot of memories. My daughter Masaba and my father shared a very special bond, which was formed here. So obviously, after 24 years, this house is filled with emotions,” the actor says in the video Urban Company.

Neena Gupta’s approach to interior design
For Neena, a home is not a showroom; it must reflect personality and comfort. “‘Ghar ghar jaisa dikhna chahiye, store nahi banna chahiye. A home should not become a showroom; it should feel like a home. There are certain things in my house that are very precious to me.” Among them is a special artefact from her time shooting Yatra with Shyam Benegal, which she brought back and later painted white. She also proudly displays her Filmfare Award and OTT Awards, which she never expected to win but profoundly cherishes.
Unlike many celebrities who hire professional designers, Neena prefers a more organic approach. “I never let anyone else design my interiors because then it looks like someone else’s taste. If I like something, I buy it, even if it doesn’t fit in my house. Eventually, it finds its place.”
Despite her acting career, Neena has always been passionate about learning. “Since childhood, I have loved stories, so I have a lot of books—not just fiction, but literature as well. I have an M.Phil. in Sanskrit. Some people ask, ‘What was the use of studying if you wanted to be an actor?’ But I believe nothing in life goes to waste.”Story continues below this ad
Her perspective on lifelong learning is inspiring. “Even this—shooting this video with you—won’t go to waste. I will learn something from it. Dance, painting—everything has value. Even lying down and thinking has value. Sometimes, when I’m acting, I remember an experience from 40 or 50 years ago. That’s how life works.”
As the tour progresses, Neena takes viewers into her kitchen, a place she considers the most essential part of her home. “My staff told me, ‘Madam, why are you showing the kitchen? It’s not fancy.’ But a kitchen doesn’t need to be fancy. It needs to be a place where delicious food is made—a warm, comfortable, cozy, and useful space.”
Neena, a vegetarian, loves experimenting with food and considers her kitchen the heart of her home. “I love food. I’m a vegetarian, but I love experimenting with food.”
Towards the end of her tour, she shares her happiness over the small changes she made.Story continues below this ad
For Neena, a home is not about perfection but comfort, love, and memories. “Sometimes, you just need a little change. When you see the same look for years, it becomes monotonous.”
