The highly speculated Harry Potter series is all set to start the filming process this coming summer. The crew will return to the iconic and revered Leavesden Studios, where the original films were shot.
Now, the series seems to be building some steam with several possible casting decisions coming to light. The search for the lead roles of the legendary trio has been a long and tedious process, with over 32,000 children auditioning for the parts. The makers have revealed that the shortled candidates will all be called up for workshops in January.
The purpose of this series has been described as a deeper dive into the lives of the people at Hogwarts. The series will have an entirely new cast, and many speculations as to who is playing who are playing out in the social media space.

While HBO is still keeping the cast under wraps, Variety has reported that Warner Bros has reached out to Mark Rylance for the role of Dumbledore. Jared Harris, son of Richard Harris, has refused to step into the shoes of his father as the iconic headmaster. On the other hand, Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Paapa Essiedu has been offered the role of Severus Snape.

While this decision may cause some stir, as many believe that the casting of a white actor for Snape’s role would be loyal to the literature. But it can be argued that Snape’s race had nothing to do with his character, and hence it shouldn’t matter who plays him. Moreover, the role of Hermione might also be played a young actress of colour. Rowling had said previously that Hermione’s race had never been specified, and she could very well be played an actress of colour.
While there has been official comment from the studios, Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort in the original films, has expressed his desire that Cillian Murphy should play the ominous villain.Story continues below this ad
Whoever is cast in this series will have big shoes to fill and a huge fanbase to impress, who will be slouching over each frame with a wand and a magnifying glass. The showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod certainly have their work cut out for them.
