‘Haven’t won ICC trophies…Test team has been one of best traveling teams: R Ashwin reacts to Vaughan’s ‘underachieving cricket team’ comments | Cricket News
After getting thrashed in the first Test in Centurion, India made a resounding comeback in the second Test in Cape Town. The performance has again been a testament to the side’s improvement in overseas conditions in the last decade and unshakable belief that the group can return from adverse situations.
However, the side has been constantly criticized for not being able to win an ICC trophy since 2013. Since the Champions Trophy wins in England, India has struggled to add another trophy to the cabinet. Though they have reached the knockout stages of these ICC competitions, they could not go that extra step to add silverware. Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan recently said India was the “most underachieving cricket team.”
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, reacting to it on his YouTube channel, would say, “Michael Vaughan made a statement after the first Test that India is an underachieving team. Yes, we haven’t won ICC trophies for years. We call ourselves the powerhouses of the game. But the Test team has been one of the best traveling teams in the vicinity. We have seen many great results.”
India has leveled their last series in England (2-2) and won in Australia (2-1) away from home. However, the team could not get across the line in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia. Yes, we lost two WTC finals. I accept it wholeheartedly. But in the case of Test series, a comeback is always possible,” Ashwin would say.
Earlier, former Indian cricket player Venkatesh Prasad reacted to a similar matter. During a Q and A interaction on X (formerly known as Twitter), when a netizen asked Prasad if he thinks India is the new choker of the world cricket, he responded saying, “Chokers not, we have won 2 Test series against Australia in Australia, the last one in 2020-21 after 36 all out, I consider as one of India’s greatest especially with more than half first choice players missing. But there is certainly something wrong about not winning any major tournament in 11 years.”
