He can’t keep going with what is done in the past: Michael Vaughan on Prithvi Shaw’s form in IPL 2023 season
Former England skipper Michael Vaughan said Prithvi Shaw cannot keep relying on his past performances after his poor start to the Indian Premier League 2023 season for the Delhi Capitals.
Speaking on the Cricbuzz Vaughan said, “I think he needs a big innings. He needs some runs. He can’t keep going on reputation. He can’t keep going with what is done in the past. He needs to produce the runs here and now. He has got a poor start. He has not gotten out of Powerplay yet with the bat in hand yet.”
Shaw’s weakness against extreme pace and short-pitch bowling has been well-documented in the past. “Early in the tournament, Mark Wood bowled him. His feet went nowhere. It was like he was waiting for the short ball and he was nowhere near the line or the pitch of the ball,” Vaughan said.
Earlier in the season former Delhi Capitals skipper Virender Sehwag too was critical of Prithvi Shaw. He bemoaned the lack of development shown Shaw. After game against Gujarat Titans Sehwag said, “He has been dismissed playing those kinds of shots so many times…but he should also learn from his makes, right? Look at Shubman Gill, who played U-19 cricket with him and is now playing Test, ODIs and T20Is for India, but Shaw is still struggling in IPL.”
“He has to make the most of this IPL platform and score runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 600-odd runs in an IPL season. Shubman Gill also scored big runs. So even Shaw has to be consent with his IPL scores,” he added.
Ahead of chasing a mediocre target of 128 runs, Vaughan had said, “it was a good opportunity for the 23-year-old to get back into form, “It is a target that won’t intimidate you as a batter you are not looking at 190s. There is no real pressure in terms of the scoring rate.”
“I think he comes out plays the way he has done in the past but he needs to be there at the end of the sixth. He has to see his team home and 60-70 not out if he can be.” However, the young right-hander once again fell early in the Powerplay for the spin of Varun Chakravarthy after scoring 13.
Despite the early loss the Capitals huffed and puffed to reach the target winning the game four wickets.
