‘He had a bit of a niggle in his knee’: Sanjay Bangar provides update on Virat Kohli’s fitness ahead of WTC final
Royal Challengers Bangalore coach Sanjay Bangar revealed that star batter Virat Kohli had been suffering with a niggle but it is nothing serious.
Speaking in post-match press conference after the game against Gujarat Titans, Bangar said, “Yeah, he had a bit of a niggle in his knee. But I don’t think there is anything serious. Having scored two back-to-back hundreds within a gap of 4 days. He is somebody who not only wants to contribute with the bat but even when he is fielding. He did a lot of running around.
“40 overs a couple of days ago and today, for 35 overs he was on the field. He was giving his best. So it is going to bother at some point but I don’t think it’s anything serious,” he added.
Kohli has been in sublime after scoring back to back tons against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans. However, despite his heroics RCB failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Kohli will be among the first batch of India players to leave for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia in London, departing in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate Mohammad Siraj will also board the same flight, a day after their team was knocked out of the IPL. Spinners R Ashwin and Axar Patel, and all-rounder Shardul Thakur, will also be on the flight as well as the team’s support staff led Rahul Dravid.
The players who will stay back in India for the IPL playoffs include skipper Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Mohammad Shami, K S Bharat and Ajinkya Rahane.
The final will be played at the Oval from June 7-11.
