US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke phone on Monday to discuss trade, Taiwan and Ukraine, according to the White House and Chinese officials.
Xi told Trump in the phone call Monday that Taiwan’s return to mainland China is “an integral part of the post-war international order,” according to the Chinese foreign minry.
“China and the United States once fought side side against fascism and militarism, and should now work together to safeguard the outcomes of World War Two,” Xi was quoted as saying Xinhua.
China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to take control of it, though the island’s government rejects Beijing’s claim and says only Taiwan’s people can decide their future.
According to Xi, China and the US, which fought together during the war against fascism and militarism, should “jointly safeguard the victory of World War II.”
