Here’s what happens to the body when you drink black coffee every morning for a month | Food-wine News

Starting your day with a cup of black coffee is a ritual many swear . Known for its bold flavour and caffeine kick, black coffee has become a staple for those seeking a quick energy boost or hoping to kickstart their metabolism. Dr Pranav Honnavara Srinivasan, senior consultant gastroenterolog at Fortis Bengaluru, tells , “Drinking black coffee daily for a month can offer several potential health benefits, many of which are linked to its rich content of antioxidants, caffeine, and essential nutrients like B vitamins.”
Some benefits can be noticed relatively quickly, while others may take longer to manifest:

– Improved Mental Alertness and Concentration: One of the most immediate benefits of drinking black coffee is its effect on mental alertness. The caffeine in coffee acts as a central nervous system stimulant, blocking adenosine receptors in the brain and promoting the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine.
– Enhanced Physical Performance: Caffeine is also known to increase adrenaline levels in the bloodstream, which can enhance physical performance preparing the body for physical exertion.
– Boosted Metabolism and Fat Burning: Black coffee has been shown to increase metabolic rate 3-11%, which can help in burning fat more efficiently. The caffeine content stimulates thermogenesis — the process which the body generates heat and energy from digesting food.
– Rich Source of Antioxidants: Coffee is packed with antioxidants, which help fight free radicals in the body. These antioxidants can reduce inflammation and support overall cellular health.Story continues below this ad

The downsides
Dr Srinivasan says, “Caffeine has been shown to have a positive impact on mood stimulating the release of dopamine, which is associated with feelings of pleasure and reward. However, too much caffeine can lead to increased levels of anxiety, restlessness, and irritability, particularly in those who are more sensitive to stimulants. This is because caffeine increases cortisol production, which can exacerbate stress responses.”
Caffeine can interfere with sleep blocking adenosine receptors, he adds, which play a crucial role in sleep regulation. If coffee is consumed daily for a month without consideration of timing, it can lead to a cumulative sleep debt, affecting overall health and well-being. It is generally recommended to avoid drinking coffee at least 6 hours before bedtime to minimise its impact on sleep.
“Over a month, the positive effects on mood and mental alertness may pers, but so can the negative effects on anxiety and sleep if consumption is not moderated. Finding a balance is key to enjoying the benefits of black coffee without the drawbacks,” asserts Dr Srinivasan.
Why you shouldn’t drink black coffee on an empty stomach
Drinking black coffee on an empty stomach is a common practice for many, but it can have some negative effects on digestion and overall health, Dr Srinivasan informs. “Coffee, particularly black coffee, can stimulate the production of stomach acid (hydrochloric acid). When consumed on an empty stomach, this can lead to an increase in gastric acidity, potentially causing discomfort, acid reflux, or heartburn.”Story continues below this ad
Coffee is known to affect gut flora composition. While moderate coffee consumption has been linked to increased microbial diversity, drinking it on an empty stomach can sometimes cause an imbalance in gut bacteria, leading to digestive issues like bloating, cramping, or diarrhea in some individuals.
Drinking coffee, Dr Srinivasan continues, especially on an empty stomach, can lead to a rapid absorption of caffeine, which may cause a spike in cortisol (the stress hormone). “This can lead to feelings of anxiety, jitteriness, and even panic attacks in sensitive individuals, particularly if they are already prone to anxiety disorders.”
