Hindu shopkeeper killed in Bangladesh — second such incident in a day: Reports | World News

A Hindu shopkeeper has been killed in Bangladesh, a second such incident reported in 24 hours. Police said Sarat Chakraborty Mani, who ran a grocery shop, was attacked with sharp weapons in Narsingdi drict late on Monday. He later died from his injuries.

Authorities said an investigation is underway. “We are investigating who was involved,” a police officer said, as reported the local Bangladesh News Channel Blitz.

Who was Sarat Chakraborty Mani?

Sarat Chakraborty Mani was a 40-year-old Hindu man from Bangladesh’s minority community. He was a grocery shop owner at Charsindur Bazaar in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi, on the outskirts of Dhaka. Mani was attacked with sharp weapons unidentified assailants while running his shop and died on the way to the hospital.

What happened yesterday

Hours earlier, another Hindu man Rana Pratap, a 45-year-old factory owner and newspaper acting editor was shot dead in Jashore drict.

Witnesses said men called him out of his ice factory, led him into an alley and shot him. Police said he was shot in the head. Seven bullet casings were found near his body.Story continues below this ad

A local resident said the attackers arrived on a motorcycle and left immediately after the shooting.Recent weeks have seen multiple violent incidents targeting members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

In separate cases across several dricts, Hindus have been killed or assaulted in attacks linked to workplace disputes, local conflicts, or mob incidents.

India has earlier said it is concerned about violence against minorities in Bangladesh, stating that reports of deaths, assaults and land-related disputes should not be dismissed.
