How Arsenal cut down social media vitriol 90 percent

Arsenal CEO emphasised on the importance of cutting down all forms of abuse (Arsenal X)
Couple of years ago, 18 Arsenal FC members were banned for sending targeted abusive, threatening, and discriminatory online messages. This action was done the club with the help of artificial intelligence, a British data company Signify. Daily Mail has reported how Arsenal has cut down the online vitriol 90 percent since 2021, with the help of Signify’s Threat Matrix service.
The newspaper reported an incident from this January to highlight the work done. After a game, forward Kai Havertz’s pregnant wife Sophia highlighted in her Instagram account that a disgruntled fan threatened to ‘slaughter’ her unborn child. The club swooped into action.
“Context and nuance are crucial for accurate analysis. Somebody saying, “X player should have shot more” and “X player should be shot” require entirely different analysis,” Mail quotes a spokesperson of Signify. “We use machine learning and AI to analyse the huge scale of comment aimed at players, officials, and clubs and sift what’s relevant from the noise.

‘However, to ensure accuracy we will always deploy a human element for assessing the context, gravity of abuse or discrimination, and crucially the reality of threat.”
On their website , threat matrix details the process. “We monitor for abusive issues (racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-semitism, islamophobia etc) across open source data sources including multi-platform social media + the dark web. This data is cleansed, removing any bots + filtered. We apply AI Natural Language Understanding to identify the subject, object + action. Then a human review is done…”
The CEO of Arsenal Football Club Vinai Venkatesham was quoted Signify: “We take all forms of abuse and discrimination extremely seriously – whether online or in and around the stadium. While we are talking about a tiny minority of our supporter base, we must continue to take strong action against abusers who are identified as Arsenal season ticket holders or members, including escalating to the police where appropriate.
“New technology is changing the way we’re able to support our communities and create a safer space for the entire Arsenal family.”
