How many hours of uninterrupted sleep should you get every night? | Health News

Sleep plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health. Sleeping allows the body to repair itself overnight, strengthens the immune system, and helps the brain function properly. When you do not get enough sleep or rest, you are more likely to feel tired, irritated, moody, exhausted, frustrated, cranky, and agitated. As such, have you ever wondered how many hours of uninterrupted sleep you should get every night? A recent report LocalCircles stated that 59 per cent of Indians surveyed get less than six hours of uninterrupted sleep daily. The report, based on responses from 15,659 individuals across various backgrounds, showed that 39 per cent sleep only 4-6 hours per day without interruption, while 20 per cent manage less than four hours of uninterrupted sleep. This accounts for 59 percent of respondents who fail to achieve more than six hours of continuous rest.

Dr Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant in internal medicine at Gleneagles Hospital Parel Mumbai, pointed out that poor sleeping habits can lead to various health issues.
“This can include issues like high blood pressure, obesity, extreme mood swings, and a weakened immune system. One must understand that quality sleep is much more than just the number of hours you sleep. Quality sleep means avoiding frequent wakeups during the night. To function properly throughout the day, one needs at least 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep,” said Dr Agarwal.

Sleep interruptions arise from multiple variables, such as work-life stress, sensitivity to light and noises, or even conditions like sleep apnea. “Lifestyle choices such as high intake of caffeine and alcohol regularly and excessive screen time before bed are all major contributors to this phenomenon,” said Dr Prasanna Kumar T, consultant pulmonolog, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bangalore.
“The effects of a durbed sleep pattern extend beyond daytime weariness. There are research studies that show chronic sleep interruption increases risks for cardiovascular disease, impaired immune function, metabolic disorders, cognitive decline, and mental health issues like anxiety and depression,” said Dr Prasanna.

While the required amount of sleep for a healthy individual varies from person to person, an adult is recommended to get at least 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night to feel refreshed, urged Dr Prasanna.
Remember that sleep needs are consently evolving throughout life, said Dr Prasanna, continuing: “Teenagers need 8-10 hours, while older adults may require slightly less in terms of quantity. The quality of your waking hours is highly dependent on the quality of your sleep, making uninterrupted sleep a priority,” mentioned Dr Prasanna.Story continues below this ad
Creating a disciplined sleeping pattern becomes crucial to improve your sleep. “Try to wake up and sleep at the same time daily. Avoid or limit your screen time before you go to bed. It is best to avoid caffeine or caffeinated drinks at night, as it can negatively affect your sleep,” said Dr Agarwal.
