Humans of Bombay CEO Karishma Mehta reveals reason behind freezing her eggs: ‘If unmarried…’ | Health News

Humans of Bombay CEO Karishma Mehta recently shared that she opted for egg freezing. Now, she has revealed the reason behind her decision, calling it an “insurance policy”.
“I decided to freeze my eggs because as women, especially, there’s always a looming cloud of a ticking biological clock. It’s great if there is a married couple who can plan for kids. But when you are unmarried, the timelines are not really in your control,” Mehta said in a social media video.
“It’s a scientific fact that after the age of 35, your egg count drops. Your chances of conceiving naturally are far lesser than in your early 30s. So, egg freezing is just that insurance policy for whenever one may choose to have children,” the 32-year-old added.

Reflecting on her decision, experts said that over the past several decades, there has been a significant shift in how women approach major life decisions, including family planning.
“The traditional timeline of graduating at 18, marrying at 19, and starting a family soon after no longer holds true for many women. Nowadays, women are more empowered to chart their own course, whether that means prioritising career development and delaying marriage and childbearing or adjusting that timeline in other ways that work best for their individual circumstances,” said Dr Sulbha Arora, clinical director, Nova IVF Fertility, Mumbai.

For a large number of women, the ability to conceive later in life becomes a growing matter of concern as age can impact fertility levels and prevent conception, added Dr Arora.
As a fertility preservation technique, egg freezing or oocyte cryopreservation helps preserve eggs for future pregnancy. It involves ovulation, where eggs are produced, harvested, frozen, and used when required. “Egg freezing opens up new possibilities and options for women who wish to preserve their fertility and make informed decisions about starting a family when they believe they are ready and want to do so,” said Dr Arora.Story continues below this ad
While this newfound flexibility is liberating, “it also requires careful consideration of one’s reproductive health”, said Dr Arora, adding that tests like hormone tests like Anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) provide an estimate of the remaining egg supply or ovarian reserve.
