The poster boy of Indian table tennis, Achanta Sharath Kamal has announced his retirement from Indian table tennis after the World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender in Chennai later this month.
The 42-year-old Sharath, who has been the flagbearer of the sport in the country, has won medals at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. He has also represented the country in five Olympic Games.
Testament to his brilliance and longevity is his seven Commonwealth Games gold medals, along with three silver and three bronze. Mind you, he won his maiden international medal at the 2004 Commonwealth TT Championships.

He has also won two bronze medals at the Asian Games and four at the Asian Table Tennis Championships.
After claiming his first national title in 2003, he went on to achieve a record-breaking 10 crowns.
Despite his age, he is still the highest-ranked Indian male player in the world – 42nd, according to the latest WTT rankings. He is 18 places above 24-year-old Manav Thakkar, the next best Indian male player.
Having played his first international tournament in Chennai, it’s only fitting that he will play his last tournament in his hometown. His family and close friends will be in attendance, which will be an added incentive.
