‘I did not say that’: Zaheer Khan sheds light on Ishant Sharma’s statement – ‘Virat said sorry… Zak told him, you’ve ended my career’ | Cricket News
After Ishant Sharma claimed that former Indian seamer Zaheer Khan had sarcastically told Virat Kohli that ‘you’ve ended career’ when the latter dropped a catch of Brendon McCullum in 2014, the left-arm pacer denied the episode and said, “I didn’t say that.”
It may be recalled here that Zaheer Khan had announced his retirement from international cricket after the match, in which McCullum went on to score a triple hundred in the second innings of the Test in Wellington.
Speaking on Jio Cinema, it was Sharma who recalled an anecdote and said, “We were playing in New Zealand.”
“Brendon McCullum had scored 300 runs and when Virat Kohli dropped a catch, I remembered that this happened around lunch. Virat said sorry to Zak and Zak said, ‘No worries, we’ll get him out.’ During tea, Kohli said sorry again and Zak told him not to worry. On the third day when Kohli apologised during tea, Zak told him, ‘You’ve ended my career,” said Sharma.
Zaheer then joined the conversation and said, “I didn’t say that. I said that there were only two players, the first was Kiran More who dropped Graham Gooch and he scored 300. After that, it’s Virat Kohli who dropped a catch and someone scored 300. Then, he told me not to talk like that, naturally as he wouldn’t have felt good about that. The catch was dropped and the runs were scored.”
India was in a commendable position in the game and was looking to level the series. However, McCullum’s marathon knock helped the hosts to escape with a draw in the game. New Zealand won the two-match Test series 1-0.
