‘I feel like he is someone who definitely deserves that kind of award’: Yuvraj Singh on Chrian Eriksen’s comeback
Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh said that he believes Manchester United’s mid-fielder Chrian Eriksen deserves the Laureus World Comeback award after he successfully resurrected his career despite collapsing on the field due to cardiac arrest in 2021 in the European Championships representing Denmark.
Speaking on Manchester United’s social media handle, Yuvraj said, “I feel like he is someone who definitely deserves that kind of award. He should be a Laureus ambassador in the future.”
Yuvraj himself continued to represent India during the 2011 ODI cricket World Cup despite having lung cancer. “An inspiring story and Definitely, when I get to meet him, I can relate to my story and put a hand on his back and tell him “well done,” he said.
Recalling the incident when Eriksen collapsed on the field against Finland he said, “I mean great story, man. Somebody who was down and out and didn’t know if he was going to live.”
Eriksen as part of his recovery got an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator which meant he could no longer represent at the time club Inter Milan as the rules in the Italian league would not allow it. Hence as part of his comeback into professional football, he came back to the English league and represented Brentford last season playing a crucial part to keep them in the Premiere league as the bees were flirting with relegation the time he joined in January 2022.
The midfielder later in the summer moved to Manchester United where he made his mark. “United was struggling last year and he came in and you feel like this was the guy we were missing. Probably the best midfielder we’ve had in a few years and definitely,” The Indian cricketer said.
The elegant playmaker scored two goals and made nine asss in all competitions so far. His presence in the mid-field alongside Brazil’s Casemerio played a crucial part in Manchester United’s resurgence this season.
Both athletes despite suffering from fatal ailments during their playing days made a comeback to play their respective sports at the top level.
