‘I love West Indian cricket’: Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag react to Windies ouster
Both Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag had contrasting opinions to West Indies not being able to qualify for the ICC ODI World Cup in India this time around. Once known to be a fiery team that would conquer all in their sight, the current crop of West Indian cricketers managed to make some dubious hory when they failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in their hory.
The defeat against Scotland was the final nail in the coffin. Earlier they had succumbed to losses against Zimbabwe and the Netherlands to begin their descent from the topmost competition in cricket. Last year they had also missed out on the T20 World Cup.
Sehwag, usually not one to mince his words, said that it wasn’t an issue of talent but one of politics that caused the team’s downfall from the biggest stages of cricket.
“What a shame. West Indies fail to qualify for the World cup. Just shows talent alone isn’t enough, need focus and good man management, free from politics. The only solace is there isn’t further low to sink from here,” tweeted Sehwag.
Gambhir on the other hand was a lot more supportive towards West Indian cricket in general and said, “I love West Indies. I love West Indian cricket. I still believe they can be the No.1 team in world cricket.”
Against Scotland, West Indies began on a poor note, losing four wickets in just the first 10 overs. After that a 77-run partnership between Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd seemed to have steadied the ship. But once they got out, the rest of the pack crumbled, leaving Scotland a target of 181 to chase down. The Scottish took down the target with less than seven overs to go and record a win that keeps them in contention for a spot at the World Cup.
