Mumbai Indians will miss Jasprit Bumrah for the initial part of the Indian Premier League due to the injury he sustained during the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Mumbai Indians Head Coach Mahela Jayawardene would confirm MI is awaiting the updates on Bumrah with anticipation as he charters his recovery at the National Cricket Academy’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Former Australian cricketer Michael Clarke would express his concerns about MI’s chances in the upcoming IPL 2025 in the absence of Bumrah. “I’m just scared about Bumrah. He’s had no cricket; he’s not starting the tournament so he can’t possibly be at his best in the first game. I know he’s a freak and he can take five wickets but I think he will get better as the tournament goes. I just don’t know. If there’s no Bumrah, Mumbai will find it extremely difficult,” Clarke said on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast.
“Jasprit is with NCA, and just started the process there. Will await their feedback on him. Progress will be monitored on day-to-day basis. Not having him is a challenge and the world’s best bowler is always an advantage for us,” Jayawardene told reporters in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The former Sri Lanka captain also said that the team will attempt to tweak and shuffle combinations early in the tournament without Bumrah. “He gives us a different element for trying things, so that in the early season we can experiment.”
Bumrah hasn’t played since the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney in January, when he walked off for scans on Day 2 and also missed the recently concluded Champions Trophy 2025 which India managed to win. Former MI bowling coach Shane Bond had recently cautioned India and Bumrah of not bearing excessive workload in the future.
