‘I’m out, f*** you’: Magnus Carlsen disqualified from World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2024 for wearing jeans | Chess News
Magnus Carlsen was fined $200 for wearing jeans before Chief Arbiter Alex Holowzsak disqualified him for repeated violation.
“I am pretty tired of FIDE, so I want no more of this. I don’t want anything to do with them. I am sorry to everyone at home, maybe it’s a stupid principle, but I don’t think it’s any fun,” said Carlsen to the Norwegian broadcasting channel NRK.
What happened?
Susan Polgar has explained what happened with Carlsen.
“Magnus Carlsen is OUT of the World Rapid Championship, and will NOT play in the World Blitz Championship,” she wrote on X.
“This is what I got so far. He wore jeans (which is not allowed FIDE according to tournament rules, which were published prior to the event). He was fined and agreed to change for tomorrow but refused to change for tonight.

“FIDE did not agree with his position. Therefore, Magnus is out of the World Rapid Championship and decided not play in the World Blitz Championship either.
“The feud with FIDE is now official.”
Carlsen’s take
Carlsen, who was handed a defeat Denis Lazavik besides being held to draws Awonder Liang, Gleb Dudin, and Aleksandr Shimanov on the opening day and was struggling on the second day as well reasoned why he would not come back and play.
“Yesterday was a difficult day. You know, I lost one game, could have lost a couple more. Generally, I was not playing well, a bit out of control,” he said on Youtube channel “Take Take Take.”

“I had a really good sleep, and I had a nice lunch meeting before I came here. I just barely had time to go to the room, change, so I put on a shirt, a jacket. And honestly, I didn’t even think about the jeans.
“I even changed my shoes, but I didn’t even think about it. And so I got here, and I don’t know if it was after the first game or second game. I think it was after… Yeah, I don’t remember.
“But I got a warning that I needed to change my… Well, first of all, I got a fine. And then I got a warning that I would not be paired if I didn’t go change my jeans immediately. They said that I could do it after the third round today.
“I said, like, I’ll change tomorrow if that’s okay. I didn’t even realise it today. But they said, well, you have to change now.
“And well, at that point it became a bit of a matter of principle for me.”

When coaxed about whether he has appealed, the former world champion said: “No, I haven’t appealed. (2:04) Honestly, I’m too old at this point to care too much.”
“If this is what they want to do, I guess it goes both ways, right? Nobody wants to back down and this is where we are. It’s fine me. (2:28) I’ll probably head off to somewhere where the weather is a bit nicer than here.”
Not playing Blitz
Magnus Carlsen has also confirmed that he won’t be playing in the Blitz championship.
“I mean, No,” he said.
Has it happened in the past?
The Norwegian slammed FIDE for enforcing rules.
“I don’t know, whether it has happened in the past or not,” he said.
“But you know, there was this whole thing where FIDE actively wanted to, they were actually going after players as well to get them not to sign with Freestyle, basically threatening them that they wouldn’t be able to play the World Championship cycle, if they played in Freestyle.
“So honestly, my patience with them was not very big to begin with. And it’s okay.
“They can enforce their rules. That’s fine me. And my response is that fine, then I’m out. Like, f** you. I don’t think anything more has to be said. Okay.
“I’m sorry for you guys and everybody at home. I hope you have a good rest of your holidays and I’ll see you at some point,” he concluded.
