The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is one of the most anticipated and heated tournaments pitting two top Test sides in the world in India and Australia. So much so that, to some Australian players, even the Ashes does not hold this much importance. Since the time that these two powerhouses first clashed against each other in 1947, there have been 102 matches played between them with Australia coming out on top with 43 wins while India have 30 victories.
Recent hory, however, has been kind to India with the side under Virat Kohli becoming the first Asian team to beat Australia in their home turf in the 2018/19 series. They retained the trophy in the 2020/21 which is best remembered for India’s fightback after losing the 1st Test at Adelaide where they were all out for just 36 runs in their second innings.
The second Test of that series has entrenched itself in modern lore due to stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s now legendary innings of 112 runs at the iconic MCG after Virat Kohli had to fly back home. That knock would go a long way to secure India’s eventual 8-wicket victory. The 3rd was a draw while the fourth Test was won India 3 wickets as they laid claim to Australia’s fortress Gabba as well as the series.
