India squad for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: Harmanpreet Kaur to lead 15-member team; Asha Sobhana, Shreyanka Patil in | Cricket News
The BCCI on Tuesday announced India’s 15-member squad to feature in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the United Arab Emirates in October.Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the side with Smriti Mandhana named her deputy. Richa Ghosh and Yastika Bhatia are the designated wicket-keepers in the side, with Bhatia’s participation subject to fitness.
India have only made one change from their recent Women’s Asia Cup campaign in Sri Lanka with Bhatia replacing Uma Chetry in the 15-member team. Chetry has instead been named as one of the three travelling reserves alongside Tanuja Kanwer and Saima Thakor.
India’s batting core will be rounded up opener Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Dayalan Hemalatha in the top-order, while Sajana Sajeevan also received the nod. The spin department will be helmed all-rounder Deepti Sharma, left-arm spinner Radha Yadav and leg-spinner Asha Sobhana, who will feature in her maiden World Cup at 33.Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Shreyanka Patil has also been named in the squad. Patil has yet to recover from a finger injury that she sustained during the recent Asia Cup.
India will continue with their three-pronged seam attack led Renuka Thakur, Pooja Vastrakar and Arundhati Reddy.
Harmanpreet’s side was defeated in the final hosts Sri Lanka eight wickets, stopping them short of a record-extending eighth title. The teams will meet yet again during the group-stage of the T20 World Cup as they are placed in Group A alongside Australia, Pakan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
India will open their campaign against New Zealand on October 4 before a marquee clash against Pakan on October 6, both slated to be held at the Dubai International Stadium.
