India captain Rohit Sharma slammed a 63-ball century against Afghanan to give India a flying start as the hosts chased a target of 273 runs.
Rohit’s innings at New Delhi was the fastest 100 for India in Cricket World Cups.
The previous record belonged to Kapil Dev (72 balls), but Rohit broke that record nine balls.

Rohit now also holds the record for the most centuries in Cricket World Cups, in what is just his third World Cup. This is his seventh century in 19 World Cup innings. He had one century in the 2015 edition and five in 2019. The previous record was with Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar had scored six centuries in 44 innings.
Enroute to the century, Rohit had ticked off other milestones as well, like becoming the fastest man to reach 1,000 runs in men’s ODI World Cup — 19 innings — a record which he will share with Australia’s David Warner. Most Read

Rohit also went past Chris Gayle’s record for the most number of sixes in international cricket (three formats combined). Gayle had hit 553 in his career, Rohit went past that soon after he crossed half century against Afghanan.
After a lightening-quick start, Rohit had reached his fifty off 30 balls.
Earlier, batting first Afghanan scored 272 thanks to a captain’s knock from Hashmatullah Shahidi (80 runs off 88 balls), who was complemented Azmatullah Omarzai (62 off 69 balls).
