Indian women’s hockey team handed boost to make cut for Paris Olympics after qualifiers shifted to Ranchi | Hockey News
The Indian women’s hockey team will have home support as they bid to make the cut for next year’s Paris Olympics after FIH announced that it was shifting the Women’s FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier from Changzhou to Ranchi.
FIH, the global governing body for hockey, announced that the decision was being made because the Chinese women’s national team qualified directly to the Olympic Games Paris 2024 through winning the Asian Games last week.
“After the Chinese women’s national team qualified directly to the Olympic Games Paris 2024 through winning the Asian Games last week, discussions were held between the Hockey National Associations of China and India for a potential change of hosts, motivated the fact that maintaining this event in China whilst their national team has already qualified for the next Olympics would have impacted the fans and media excitement in the country,” FIH said in a statement. “The move to India would ensure exactly the opposite and this would benefit all teams as they can expect playing in that wonderful atmosphere and excitement that Indian fans and media are always creating. Therefore, both Hockey National Associations of China and India came up with this proposal, which has now been approved the International Hockey Federation (FIH).”
The tournament will be held in Jharkhand’s capital from January 13 to 19 next year. The other three FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers will be played in Muscat, Oman (Men’s – 15-21 January 2024) and Valencia, Spain (Women’s and Men’s – 13-21 January).
Six women’s and six men’s teams will qualify for Paris 2024 through these FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers. Australia (women and men), the Netherlands (women and men), China (women) and India (men) have already secured their spot at the Paris 2024 hockey Olympic tournaments, therefore joining hosts France.
