(AP Photo)Israel Iran Ceasefire LIVE updates: US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States is preparing to hold talks with Iran next week, likely seeking a commitment from Tehran to end its nuclear ambitions. Speaking at the NATO summit in The Hague, Trump said: “I’ll tell you what, we’re going to talk with them next week, with Iran. We may sign an agreement, I don’t know, I don’t care if I have an agreement or not. The only thing we would be asking for is what we were asking for before, we want no nuclear.”
Iran on cooperation with the IAEA: Iran’s parliament has approved a bill to suspend its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), following recent US and Israeli strikes on its nuclear facilities. This move will make it more difficult to determine the location of any highly enriched uranium. An assessment of the degree of damage inflicted on Iran’s three key nuclear sites will also be challenging.
Damage to Iran’s nuclear sites: A US intelligence report prepared the Pentagon assessed that the US strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities on 20 June did not damage the core components of Tehran’s nuclear programme, but had only set it back several months. However, the CIA, citing a “body of credible intelligence”, confirmed that US strikes had “severely damaged” the sites and that it would take years to rebuild them. Speaking at the NATO summit, Trump dismissed the initial intelligence assessments as “inconclusive”. “The intelligence says we don’t know. It could’ve been very severe. That’s what the intelligence suggests,” he said.
