Israeli Prime Miner Benjamin Netanyahu said he plans to urge US President Donald Trump to ease newly imposed tariffs on Israeli goods when the two leaders meet in Washington this week, according to Reuters.
Netanyahu, who had been visiting Hungary, is expected to meet Trump on Monday. He said the high tariffs—part of a broader policy shift the US pose a serious challenge to Israel’s economy.
“I hope that I will be able to help on this issue. That is the intention,” Netanyahu said before leaving for the United States. “I am the first foreign leader who will meet President Trump about this, which shows the special personal link, as well as the special ties between the US and Israel.”

The US recently introduced a 17% tariff on Israeli goods, including key exports like machinery and medical equipment. Officials from Israel’s finance minry told Reuters the change could significantly impact trade between the two countries.
Trump extended the surprise invitation during a phone call on Thursday, when Netanyahu raised the tariff issue, according to Israeli officials.
In contrast, Israel had dropped its remaining tariffs on US imports just last week. Nearly all goods from the US now enter Israel tax-free under a free trade agreement signed 40 years ago.
Netanyahu said his meeting with Trump would also address the ongoing situation in Gaza, including the fate of Israeli hostages still held there after 18 months.
