James Anderson announces retirement after Lord’s Test against West Indies in July | Cricket News
England’s record wicket-taker James Anderson has announced that he will retire from international cricket after the team’s first Test of the home summer against West Indies at Lord’s, starting July 10.
Announcing his decision on an Instagram post, Anderson said: “Just a note to say that the first Test of the summer at Lord’s will be my last Test.
“It’s been an incredible 20 years representing my country, playing the game I’ve loved since I was a kid. I’m going to miss walking out for England so much. But I know the time is right to step aside and let others realise their dreams just like I got to, because there is no greater feeling.”
Playing during the Ashes in England last summer, the veteran seamer had only claimed five wickets from four outings. In England’s five-match series loss to India – 4-1 – earlier this year, Anderson had picked 10 wickets from four matches.
“I couldn’t have done it without the love and support of Daniella, Lola, Ru and my parents. A huge thank you to them. Also, thank you to the players and coaches who have made this the best job in the world.
I’m excited for the new challenges that lie ahead, as well as filling my days with even more golf,” Anderson added in his post.
According to The Guardian, England Test head coach Brendon McCullum had made a visit to the UK from New Zealand to personally convey the message to the 41-year-old seamer that the Test team is looking to incorporate changes for the future. The England daily said the management is looking towards the Ashes 2025/26 series Down Under and does not see Anderson making the cut for the same.
The 41-year-old crossed the milestone of 700 Test wickets during the India series, becoming the first pacer to scale the mark and only the third bowler ever behind Muttiah Muralidaran and Shane Warne.
Having featured in 400 international matches, Anderson has picked up 987 wickets across formats – the most among all seamers. Despite playing his last ODI during the 2015 World Cup, Anderson leads the charts for England with 269 wickets.
