Advance booking for select IMAX shows of Chropher Nolan’s The Odyssey opens a year before release; major screens fill up fast | Hollywood News

After the global box office success and sweeping Oscars run for his last film Oppenheimer, Chropher Nolan will be back next year with The Odyssey, another book adaptation, of Homer’s ancient Greek epic of the same name. Universal Pictures, which is backing the film after a successful tie-up with Nolan in Oppenheimer, has opened advance booking for the film a year before it’s slated to release in cinemas.
On Thursday, the tickets for select IMAX shows of The Odyssey went on sale in the US. The official social media handles of IMAX led the screens available to book tickets in. All of them are IMAX 70 MM screens, the preferred format for Nolan’s films. The Odyssey is slated to release in cinemas on July 17, 2026.

The limited screens begin to fill up within minutes, with some of them getting sold out in hours. Several audience members complained about not getting tickets on their X handles, sharing screenshots of sold-out screens and expressing their frustration through hilarious memes. An X user wrote along with a screenshot of a sold-out screen, “I’m sorry but no other director has motion like Chropher Nolan. This is insane. Why tf am I pissed a year in advance. Now everyday leading up I’m gonna randomly remember and be sad.”

Another user shared screenshot of tickets to The Odyssey’s opening day shows being resold for outrageous prices like $100-150 on eBay. “Chropher Nolan making The Odyssey an immersive experience making us wait an entire year after buying our tickets like we are Odysseus spending 10 years trying to find his son,” joked another user on X.

The Odyssey will be the first film ever to be fully filmed using IMAX cameras. Nolan’s obsession with the technology began with his 2008 blockbuster superhero film The Dark Knight, when certain key action sequences were shot with IMAX cameras. Since then, Nolan has harnessed the technology in memorable movies like Inception (2009), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Interstellar (2014), Tenet (2020), and most recently, Oppenheimer (2023). In fact, 20% of Oppenheimer’s grand global box office gross of $975 million came from the IMAX screens.

The first teaser of The Odyssey, which debuted exclusively in theatres ahead of Jurassic Park: Rebirth, later leaked on social media platforms. The 70-second teaser features actor Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as his son Telemachus, and Jon Bernthal in an undisclosed role. It opens with a voice that sounds like Robert Pattinson, who is also part of the cast. ”
