Now, Sevagram in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Monday called for earmarking around 100 acres of land at Nava Raipur to set up a Sevagram like the one in Wardha.

This will mark the 75th year of Independence and retain Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of Gram Swaraj. An action plan should be submitted before October 2, he said.

He added Gandhi believed that village reform was the only option to improve the conditions of India. The Sevagram is being established to carry forward the work of village reform, an official communication quoted him as saying. He said Sevagram will be a place where visitors can learn about local arts and crafts as well as cuisine. It will have an open theater.

Old age homes and schools for the underprivileged will also be established. The memories of the freedom movement and the national history will be kept alive, he said.

Sevagram in Wardha, Maharashtra, came up in 1936 as the residence of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba.
