Liberals’ Carney, Conservatives’ Poilievre make final pitch for Canada election under shadow of Vancouver tragedy | World News
With curtains drawn for campaigning in the Canada election, Prime Miner Mark Carney led Liberals and Pierre Poilievre led Conservatives wrapped up their election crusade on a solemn note on Sunday, after at least 11 people died when a man plowed his SUV into a crowd of people, celebrating Filipino community festival in Vancouver.
The five week election campaign came to an end on Sunday as Carney and Poilievre pitched to voters ahead of Canada’s election scheduled on April 28, and the election has majorly centered around US President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs and threats to annex Canada.
It remains to be seen if the mass casualty tragedy that took place on Sunday in Vancouver would play any role in deciding the next prime miner of the country. A Liberal party official said that PM Carney is scheduled to visit Vancouver later on Sunday to join British Columbia Premier David E and community leaders.

Both Carney and Poilievre paid their respects and condolences after the deadly incident, while the Vancouver Police arrested the suspect Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30, and charged him with eight counts of second degree murder, as police added that victims are aged between five and 65.

At a meeting with Liberal supporters, PM Carney said “Our hearts go to the friends and the families of those affected. It’s a terrible loss in a very tight-knit community, the Filipino community in the Lower Mainland, the Filipino community here in Saskatoon, the 1-million-strong Filipino community across Canada, and in fact, all Canadians,” Reuters reported.

Poilievre also paid homage to Canada’s Filipino community “who have lost so much” during a speech at an event in Oakville, Ontario. The Conservative leader has promised to revoke a federal sales tax on Canadian made automobiles till US President Trump’s tariffs are in place, slash spending on foreign aid among others.
The voting in Canada’s election begins on April 28 and the first set of election results is reportedly expected to come on April 29 at 4:30am (GMT), according to Bloomberg.
