‘Liberation day’ tariffs set to take effect immediately, Trump ‘perfecting’ plan with advisers: US | World News

After days of touting April 2 as a “Liberation Day” for United States imposing an array of new tariffs that could upend the global trade system, White House on Tuesday confirmed that reciprocal tariffs will be “effective immediately.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt speaking to reporters said that President Donald Trump is spending Tuesday “perfecting” a tariff plan with his trade advisers.
“He is with his trade and tariff team right now, perfecting it to make sure this is a perfect deal for the American people and the American worker, and you will all find out in about 24 hours from now,” Leavitt said.

Trump has promised to introduce a series of reciprocal tariffs on what he calls “Liberation Day,” with a formal announcement scheduled for 4 pm (local time) Wednesday in the White House Rose Garden.
The specifics of the plan have not yet been disclosed, as White House advisers continue presenting Trump with various options ahead of the announcement.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated Trump’s willingness to negotiate, stating that he remains open to discussions with foreign leaders or industry executives seeking exemptions.
“The president is always up to take a phone call, always up for a good negotiation, but he is very much focused on fixing the wrongs of the past and ensuring American workers get a fair shake,” Leavitt said.
