Liquor shops to be shut down on public demand: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

BHOPAL: Reiterating his commitment to an addiction-free society, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday announced the state government would shut down all liquor shops, if people launch a de-addiction drive in that area.
He also said after the Narmada river, a similar drive would be launched to remove liquor shops from 5 km periphery of the Tapti river.
“We have been discouraging alcoholism among youth in villages and people have joined hands in creating awareness towards de-addiction across the state. If people demand removal of a liquor shop in their area and launch a campaign against alcoholism, the government will shut down the shop,” said Chouhan, while addressing the 15th annual convention of Narmada Mahila Sangh in Betul police ground.
The chief minister said a campaign for removal of liquor shops from the banks of Tapti river would also be launched after 58 liquor shops were removed from 1,000 km stretch of Narmada river.
“Villagers in association with social organisations are administering oath to youth to quit alcohol. To encourage the drive, government will also shut down liquor shops situated on the banks of Tapti river, a lifeline for the people of Betul,” said Chouhan.
The chief minister also encouraged people to support campaign for environment conservation, desist from using polythene and avoid releasing drainage water into the Tapti river.
Chouhan had made an announcement in this regard during the ongoing ‘Namami Devi Narmade Sewa Yatra’ launched on December 22.
In successive campaigns, Chouhan has been reiterating his commitment to de-addiction drive and closure of liquor shops on the bank of river Narmada. It was also stated that the government will not auction liquor shops near the river for next financial year.
In the Betul rally, the chief minister announced a subsidy of Rs 40 crore for Narmada Mahila Sangh saying the government was committed to make women owner of movable and immovable property. The government will also enact a law to provide pattas to women so that they can hold the right to own immovable property, he added.

“The government has decided to provide affordable houses or pattas to BPL families and homeless people. But, we have decided to give property rights to women and thus pattas given to poor families will be in the name of the female member. The government will also bring a law to fulfil its promise,” said the chief minister.
Advocating capital punishment for rapists in the country, Chouhan reiterated his government would bring a legislation in the state assembly to enact law for capital punishment for rape accused.
“I have advocated capital punishment for rapists and requested all political parties, social activists and women organisations to initiate public movement for this. If needed, law should be enacted by bringing amendments in the Constitution. The recommendations will be forwarded to the Central government,” said Chouhan.
The chief minister also inaugurated a Rs 384 crore medium irrigation project in village Bisnur.
