‘Lost just 50 runs’: Ruturaj Gaikwad downplays magnitude of CSK’s first home defeat to RCB in 17 years | Ipl News

Chennai Super Kings were thoroughly outplayed Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their home den at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk for the first time in 17 years since their maiden meeting at the venue. Still, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad downplayed the magnitude of Friday’s 50-run defeat to their arch-rivals.
CSK were also deprived of a Playoffs in their previous meeting last year when RCB scripted a 27-run victory in their final league encounter at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, sparking interest towards the Chepauk face-off. However, CSK were playing catch-up from the start after opting to bowl first. The visitors put on their second-highest total against the Super Kings at the venue, with captain Rajat Patidar’s 32-ball 51 leading the charge to 196/7 in 20 overs.
In reply, the CSK chase never got going as a clinical Bengaluru bowling effort restricted Gaikwad and Co. to a lowly 146/8, marking a 50-run defeat. Gaikwad, however, was not bothered the margin of defeat, five days after they scraped past Mumbai Indians in a final-over win on the ground.

‘Just 50 runs’
“To be honest, I still feel 170 was a par score on this wicket. It wasn’t that great to bat. A bad day in the fielding cost us really badly. At the end of the day, when you are chasing 170, you bat differently. You have a little bit of time when you go in to bat. When you’re chasing 20 runs extra on a wicket where you know it’s going to be a little bit sticky, and it’s going to stop after the ball gets old, you have to bat slightly differently in the powerplay,” Gaikwad said at the post-match presentation.

“It got a little bit slower and sticky. The new ball was sticking a lot until the five overs, don’t really know how it happened. I went and backed my shot, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
“There are times when you have a par score in your mind, and probably when you’re chasing 20 runs extra, you always want to be a step ahead of the game while you are chasing. That’s what the thinking was, didn’t really work out. Still happy that we didn’t lose a big margin, and at the end, it was just 50 runs,” Gaikwad added.
The CSK-RCB tie is still skewed heavily in favour of the Super Kings who have won 21 of the 33 completed outings.
