Ravi Shastri on Vaibhav Suryavanshi: ‘It’s how he handles failure, as people will come up with new things’ | Ipl News

After hitting the second fastest century in IPL hory after Chris Gayle, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi created a number of records in the Rajasthan Royals versus Gujarat Titans game on Monday. The Bihar batsman also became the youngest player to score a T20 hundred with his knock of 101 runs in Rajasthan Royals’ eight-wicket win over Gujarat Titans and former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri believes it’s how he handles failure will be the key for the youngster.
“I think the first shot he ever played (against Lucknow), that would have taken everyone’s breath away. But he’s young, just let him play. I would say just let him play a bit because it’s at that age, there’s bound to be failure as well. It’s how he handles failure, as people will come up with new things,” Shastri said on The ICC Review.
The 14-year-old youngster hit seven fours and 11 sixes during his knock on Sunday with his hundred coming in just 35 balls. It also meant that Suryavanshi became the second fastest to score an IPL hundred with Chris Gayle holding the record for the fastest IPL hundred in 30 balls. The Bihar batsman also broke Yusuf Pathan’s record of a fastest IPL hundred an Indian batsman (37-ball hundred against Mumbai Indians in 2010) with his knock. Suryavanshi also surpassed Maharashtra batsman Vijay Zol’s earlier record of being the youngest player to hit an IPL hundred. Zol had made the record batting against Mumbai at the age of 14 years and 118 days while Suryavanshi made the record at the age of 14 years and 32 days.

Shastri also shared how bowlers will use ‘short ball’ tactics against Suryavanshi in future. “There’ll be lots of short stuff thrown at him the next time he comes out to bat because when you tonk someone’s first ball for six, then you show no mercy. Then you don’t care whether he’s 14 years old or 12 years old or 20 years old. The menu is the same that you dish out. So, he’ll have to get used to that and once we see him handling that then you can make a proper judgement,” added Shastri.
Former Australian batsman Michael Hussey too showered praise on Suryavanshi, comparing the youngster to a young Adam Gilchr. “We felt this in Australia when Adam Gilchr walked out to bat, the whole team would come into the viewing area, sit there and watch the game, because they’re just so exciting. I felt the same watching this young kid last night,” Hussey, who is the batting coach of Chennai Super Kings, said on Tuesday.
